What is the MACD indicator and how do you read it?

Short answer

MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) is the 12 EMA minus the 26 EMA. A 9-period EMA of that line is the signal line, and the histogram is the gap between them. When MACD crosses above its signal line, momentum is turning up; crossovers above the zero line fit an uptrend best.

Try this
  1. 1Try faster settings (fast 8, slow 17) and count the extra crossovers.
  2. 2Switch on “Only above zero” and see which crossovers survive.
  3. 3Find where the histogram shrinks before a crossover — that's momentum fading.

The three parts of MACD

MACD was created by Gerald Appel. It turns two moving averages into one momentum reading, drawn in a pane below the chart.

PartHow it's builtWhat it tells you
MACD line12 EMA − 26 EMAAbove zero: the short-term average is above the longer one
Signal line9 EMA of the MACD lineA slower copy to compare against
HistogramMACD line − signal lineGrowing bars: momentum building. Shrinking bars: momentum fading

The default settings are written as 12, 26, 9. They were designed for daily charts and remain the most common choice.

Worked example · MACD in numbers, two days (Stock A)
Day 1: 12 EMA / 26 EMA
₹508 / ₹500
Day 1: MACD line
₹508 − ₹500 = 8
Day 1: signal line / histogram
6 / 8 − 6 = +2
Day 2: MACD line / signal line
7 / 6.2
Day 2: histogram
7 − 6.2 = +0.8

MACD is still above zero and above its signal line, so the uptrend is intact. But the histogram shrank from +2 to +0.8: the move is losing speed. That's often what a pullback looks like before it shows up clearly in price.

MACD is measured in rupees, not on a fixed scale like RSI. A MACD of 8 on a ₹500 stock and a MACD of 8 on a ₹5,000 stock mean very different things, so compare a stock's MACD only with its own past readings.

Reading a MACD crossover

A bullish crossover is the MACD line crossing above the signal line. A bearish crossover is the reverse. The histogram crosses zero at the same moment, which is why some traders watch the bars instead of the lines.

Where the crossover happens matters. A bullish crossover above the zero line means the stock was already in an uptrend and momentum is resuming after a pullback. A bullish crossover deep below zero is a bounce inside a downtrend, which is weaker.

Use the switch in the lab above to show only crossovers above zero. Notice how many of the noisier signals disappear.

Reading the histogram

The histogram is the most useful part for timing, because it changes before the lines cross. Read it in four states.

HistogramWhat it meansHow swing traders read it
Above zero and growingUpward momentum buildingTrend move in progress; no reason to act yet
Above zero and shrinkingUpward momentum fadingA pullback may be starting; tighten the plan, don't panic
Below zero and growing deeperDownward momentum buildingThe pullback is gaining force; wait
Below zero and shrinkingDownward momentum fadingSellers tiring; watch support for a trigger

In an uptrend, the setup many traders look for is the last row: a pullback where the histogram's red bars start getting shorter while price sits on support. The crossover itself comes a few days later.

MACD divergence

Divergence works the same way as with RSI. If price makes a higher high but the MACD line makes a lower high, the second push had less force behind it. That's a bearish divergence. A lower low in price with a higher low in MACD is a bullish divergence.

Because MACD is slower than RSI, its divergences show up less often and later. That can make them a little more meaningful, but they still don't time the turn. Treat a divergence as a reason to look harder at the chart — at the level, the candle and the volume — not as a trade.

Not a sell signal

Strong trends can show divergence on every new high for weeks. Selling every bearish divergence in a rising stock is a common way to miss the trend.

Why MACD lags

MACD is built from moving averages, and averages are built from past closes. So every MACD signal comes after price has already turned. That's the trade-off: fewer false alarms than raw price, but later entries.

Watch out

In sideways markets MACD crosses back and forth around zero. If the histogram keeps flipping, there's no trend to trade.

Settings for swing trading

Most swing traders keep 12, 26, 9 on the daily chart. Faster settings, such as 8, 17, 9, react sooner but cross more often. Slower ones give fewer, later signals. Try different inputs in the lab and count the crossovers — more signals doesn't mean more good trades.

Settings (illustrative)SpeedTrade-off
8, 17, 9FasterEarlier signals, more of them false in choppy markets
12, 26, 9StandardThe common default; many traders watch the same lines
19, 39, 9SlowerFewer, later signals; suits longer holds

If you already use the 20 and 50 EMA, MACD repeats much of the same information. Many traders pick either MACD or RSI for momentum, not both.

MACD in a planned trade

Worked example · A crossover above zero
Trend
Price above the 50 EMA; MACD above zero
Pullback
Histogram shrinks as price dips to support at ₹250
Trigger
MACD crosses above its signal line, still above zero
Entry and stop
Entry ₹256, stop-loss ₹244 below support
Target
₹280, the previous high

Risk ₹12 a share, reward ₹24: a 1:2 risk-reward. MACD confirmed the timing; support set the stop.

With ₹1,00,000 of capital and 1% risk, that's ₹1,000 ÷ ₹12 = 83 shares. The position size calculator does this for you.

A MACD checklist and common mistakes

  1. 1Check the trend on price first: higher highs and higher lows, price above the 50 EMA.
  2. 2Prefer MACD above zero for long trades.
  3. 3Wait for a pullback to support with the histogram shrinking.
  4. 4Use the crossover, or the histogram turning up, as confirmation — not the whole reason.
  5. 5Put the stop below the pullback low and size from it.

And the mistakes that cost the most:

  • Taking every crossover. In a range, MACD crosses back and forth and most signals fail.
  • Buying crossovers deep below zero as if the downtrend were over.
  • Stacking MACD on top of RSI and other oscillators that say the same thing.
  • Waiting for MACD to confirm an exit after price has already broken your level. Price and your stop come first.

Signal line
A 9-period EMA of the MACD line that crossovers are measured against.
Histogram
Bars showing the MACD line minus the signal line.

Common questions

What are the best MACD settings for swing trading?

The default 12, 26, 9 on the daily chart works for most swing traders. Faster settings give earlier but noisier signals.

Is MACD a leading or lagging indicator?

Lagging. It's built from moving averages, so its signals follow price rather than predict it.

Can I trade MACD crossovers alone?

It's risky. In sideways markets crossovers fail often. Combine them with trend, support and resistance, and a planned stop-loss.

What does MACD divergence mean?

Price makes a new high or low while MACD doesn't. It hints that momentum is fading, but price should confirm before you act.

What does it mean when MACD is below zero?

The 12 EMA is below the 26 EMA, so short-term prices have been weaker than the longer average. In swing trading it usually points to a downtrend or a deep pullback.

Which timeframe should I use MACD on for swing trading?

The daily chart, with the default 12, 26, 9, suits trades held for days to weeks. Some traders also glance at the weekly MACD to see the bigger trend.

Should I use MACD or RSI?

Either can do the momentum job. RSI is bounded from 0 to 100 and reacts faster; MACD is smoother and ties directly to moving averages. Pick one so your chart stays clean.

What is the MACD histogram telling me?

The histogram is the gap between the MACD line and the signal line. Tall bars mean momentum is strong in that direction. Bars that shrink for several days mean momentum is fading, even if price is still rising. Treat shrinking bars as a reason to tighten your plan, not as a signal to exit on their own.

MACD indicator kaise use kare?

Jab MACD line signal line ke upar cross kare, momentum upar mud raha hai. Zero line ke upar ka crossover uptrend mein zyada bharosemand maana jaata hai.
